Sucralose

MR writes a short guest entry -- it may sound familiar from Mary's blog:

Scott,
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

You have repeatedly raised fears about sucralose, but to date the only documentation that you've provided has been a highly pseudoscientific website page from Dr. Mercola. You're right that anyone with access to Google, or who reads any of numerous longevity/health oriented books, will have access to plenty of claims about the alleged "dangers" of sucralose, but I have yet to see any that have any scientific merit whatsoever. Do you actually have any evidence that sucralose is anything but harmless?

Thanks,

Love is the law, love under Will.

Well,
As far as I know, sugar is much much more dangerous than saclerose or aspartame. We heard of them being really unhealthy, we never hear of sugar of being unhealthy, although there are so many people with diabetes and sugar industry is kicking...
I heard that if you consume high doses of aspartame, or any fake sugar, you experience MS -like symptoms. I' ve been consuming large doses of fake sugar for the last 15 years be it the diet coke or the sweetenr for my coffee, I haven't exprienced any health problem, and if I comsumed regular coke and coffee with sugar the way I do without sugar, I would be dead of diabetes and overweight long ago..
I don't like them sugar substitutes, but they're o.k. nevertheless. Better than sugar anyway.

Yes - there is a lot of stuff on the Web that is not evidence-based. Your head would explode if you paid attention to it all. Of course, there is also some good stuff totally ignored by conventional medicine. So hard to sift the two apart. Thanks, MR, for your help in this matter, as always.

There are plenty of highly respected nutritional authors who warn the sucralose is dangerous, in their books and newsletters. I will not devote the time researching this for you and quoting their statements here. On the net you can easily find numerous sources, such as:

http://www.holisticmed.com/splenda/
http://www.splendaexposed.com/

And many more.

If you have read the book, The Wisdom of Crowds, you'd know that, much more often than not, when there's smoke there's fire, and there's plenty of smoke rising from sucralose. Have you seen the DVD, Sweet Misery? If not, highly recommend it, as it's a well researched documentary on the artificial sweetener industry, with numerous doctors interviewed, and plenty of case studies.

With all of this "smoke" surrounding sucralose, why even take the chance?! Why take the chance that sucralose could be a sabotaging your dedicated CR efforts to a degree?!

A silly risk to take. Or maybe that's just my way of thinking. For me, it's not a risk I'll take, while the makers of sucralose giggle all the way to the bank at my expense.
