Help With Raw Veggies
One of my readers, Carolyn, asks what people do to prevent problems with digestion when eating a lot of raw veggies. I'm not much help here, since I don't seem to experience difficulties. I eat my salads raw and carrots and celery and such also raw, but I cook my veggie soups and steam my broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. I've never had any trouble, even when I eat fairly big salads, so I'm not sure how to help. Do my readers have suggestions?

I've never had digestion problems of eating raw veggies except for raw onion, but it's little thin mebrane is responsible for stomach upset, if you remove that, it's o.k. I've also been eating raw veggies daily ever since I was about 3 years old, because I love them. I believe it's a matter of getting your system used to it if you didn't eat raw veggies a lot while growing up. You'll struggle for a couple of days or weeks, but your system will eventually get used to it.

Thanks! I think through time our bodies have become acclimated to cooked foods and we need to adjust to more raw foods (isn't that what they thought our appendix was used for centuries ago); I found I couldn't do a full raw foods diet w/o upset. I didn't know if there were foods or combos that aided in digestion, or spices like cardamon, anise etc.

Hi April
I would recommend taking Beano, or ValuePricedMed.com's less expensive alternative, Bean-zyme, when consuming beans, cabbage, broccoli, etc. to aid digestion. Also, if you're going to eat a lot of raw foods, sometimes it's good to process it in a food processor, for texture, taste, and to reduce the size of the bulk. But that would be for making pates.
Cheers

Take Bifido Biotics from Allergy Research - a cap a day for a couple of weeks and then a cap once or twice a week indefinitely. This fixed up my husband's digestive track. He can eat whole raw bell peppers now. Used to be totally impossible for him. Same with raw onion.

Digestion problems from raw vegetables can be due to the introduction of strange bacteria into your body. You can kill these bacteria by tossing your veggies with a vinegar dressing. The vinegar acts as a disinfectant. Also, make sure that your digestive system is well populated by friendly bacteria found in yogurt or kefir. These bacteria will keep other bacteria from gaining the upper hand inside your gut.
