Pre-Photo Shoot Detox
This doesn't line up well. I have a photo shoot for New York Magazine tomorrow (thank you all for your wonderful suggestions for photogenic food!) and I went to a birthday party last night. Susan turned 27, and she and her husband threw a party at this very interesting bowling alley called Lucky Strike which is more of a bar/lounge with bowling, kinda a club. I don't bowl (I don't like to pick up heavy things and throw them) but it was more about hanging out anyway, so I had a great time. Unfortunately, however, no doubt influenced by the delicious cherry cosmo that tasted like Cool-Aid, I ate more than a few bites of the party food, including fried items of various descriptions. All salt-filled. So it's the day before the photo shoot and I am uncharacteristically puffy from eating salt-filled food. One thing I notice about CR is that now that I'm used to being in a pretty serious state of health almost all the time, I can see the difference when I eat or drink things off the healthy path. Not a big deal for my long-term CR to go a bit nuts (or fries, as the case may be) at a birthday party -- as you'll recall, an essential part of my CR practice is the flexibility to go out every once in awhile and not worry about it -- but it's bad timing the day before a photo shoot.
Therefore, it's time for the photo shoot detox. NO SALT. No half salt, no hot sauce with salt in it, no salt. No South Beach Diet Wraps, no Lean Cuisines, no salt. No salt. No nonfat cheddar, no no-cal salad dressing, no salt of any sort. "No Salt" salt substitute is fine, and vinegar is great. Lemon, yes. Salt, no. No cottage cheese -- it has some salt. No salsa. No lightly salted roasted pumpkin seeds. NO SALT. None.
Lots of water. Fresh veggies with no salt. No salt.
One day of no salt, no trace of salt, no salt at all, will eliminate all post-restaurant eating puffiness.
At the risk of repeating myself, no salt.

Good luck with the detox. All I have to say is whatever you do, DON'T drink Traditional Medicinal's EveryDay Detox Tea. Rank, nasty, foul. Not yummy. I tried it yesterday and drank about three swallows before pitching it in the sink. On the other hand, my husband made himself a cup this morning (which is beyond strange - you'd have to know him) and said he didn't think it was all that bad. Nonetheless, you have my recommendation: Two thumbs way down on that detox tea.
I daresay if you're off the salt for a day, the puffiness should surely go down. I have to confess I've never worried too much about sodium, just 'cause I've always had scary low blood pressure, even as an overweight person. I feel moderately guilty about that, but then I think about all the other things I have to be concerned with (calories, calcium, magnesium, EFAs, etc.) that sodium is just too low on the list to freak out about.
Good luck on the photo shoot - hope you'll post a link online when the story comes out, or scan it so we can all see it!

Knowing how much you love salt, you have got to be the most self-disciplined person ever (except for MR, of course, but that's another topic)! Have you tried "No Salt"? I did and found it somewhat revolting. Just 2 more sleeps! MiG ;-)
