CNN Goes To Whole Foods!
This morning at 8:30 I met David the producer and William the cameraman in front of my local Whole Foods, Center City location. Beth, the marketing director, met us at the door and was extremely helpful in making sure we found everything we need. My favorite produce manager ever, Dennis, wasn't in, but Vince helped me in his place. We had a great time. The produce, which is usually gorgeous, was even prettier than usual. I got my usual staples: mustard greens, kale, napa cabbage (all for salads), eggplant, organic green peppers, Butterworks Farms nonfat organic plain yogurt (aka magic yogurt) and all the other usuals. Picked up some flax oil for a coworker who wants to try it.
Beth even gave us some parting gifts! She left us with reusable shopping bags (MR and I already had quite a few because we bring our own bags, including produce bags, everywhere, but we really appreciated the pretty new one, since one of our collection recently died!) and a bottle of their house brand Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. We will very much enjoy our treats!
Tonight for dinner I made good use of my Whole Foods produce. I simmered brussels sprouts, Japanese eggplant and red onion in dry white wine and added of fresh basil at the end. Asparagus with lemon on the side, flax oil and olive oil on both. I served it over Quorn tenders (which we love, and to which I suggest that folks apply the "Try it before you trash it" rule) but this is another example of pick your own protein meals. You could take the combo of veggies and herbs and serve it over chicken, shrimp, scallops, tilapia, eggwhites, tofu, or turkey. Fresh basil is so delicious... maybe this year we'll grow our own. I can't grow it inside because Kieffer the cat loves to eat plants. Especially herbs. I think he's hoping they're catnip and waiting for the hit.
Saturday and Sunday night cooking is so much fun for me. I love to have the time to do some thinking about what flavors to blend, and seeing the fresh produce displayed so beautifully at Whole Foods in the morning always yields some vegetable inspiration!

Comments
Hi April, I fixed the comment thing - my settings were all wrong. I'll just respond to your comment here, since otherwise it'll get buried at the bottom of my blog.
I don't mind corrections/advice at all, I really appciate it, how else am I going to learn to do this right? I'll be sad to give up sauteeing in oil though, it seems like it really brings out the flavors. Maybe it's just the contrast between oil-free cooking though, and swirling it in at the end will have the same effect. I hope so.
I don't really know how fast I'm losing weight, because my scale is not terribly reliable. I think I lost about 5-6 pounds of water weight in the first 3 or 4 days, which is normal I know. Since then, so in a week, I've probably lost about two pounds. I don't consider myself particularly slim, but I'm defintely not overweight, so I should probably aim for about 1 pound per week of loss. It's kind of hard to want to lose weight more slowly though! I will weigh reconsider my calorie level once I've been doing CRON for a full month, based on my weight. Perhaps if I do eat more while my cousin is here it'll be a good thing though :)
Your dinner, as always, sounds great. I'm going to pick up some quorn at the store today to try - quorn is everywhere in London, while tofu is a little harder to find (a good thing, I suppose). And fresh basil is one of the best food ever.

Emily - you can find tofu easily at Sainsburys (in the chiller cabinet, Cauldron Organics is the brand I grab, it comes plain and in smoked pieces). Also, have you checked out the Planet Organic branches - I don't know where you are in London, but you can find one off Fulham Broadway and one on Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill area. Whole Foods is about to open on Kensington High Street.
April, I've been reading your blog for a month or so now. I've often wanted to comment but it takes me a while to get my words in the right order, and then I am usually too late. Quorn though... We've had that in England for years, and as a new vegetarian I was keen on it for a while, but now the whole mass produced artificiality of it just does not appeal at all. At least they make it with free-range egg albumen now... or did they take that out? I don't eat it any more so I can't remember. Your posts are really interesting, and it's easier to click into a CRON mindest if I keep up with them, but I don't do it every day - I am trying not to feel bad about that.
I hope you don't mind me leaping in and adding a comment here.

How could I possible live without my Whole Foods!
off topic question: What do you call a person who has been doing something similar to C.R. all her life? I mean always watching calories and portions, and always trying to make sure ones food is high quality nutrition?
She has never been seriously overweight, and is called too thin by some.
even one who has dabbled in Atkins of and on, then goes fruitarian, then raw vegan,
and now is a combo of C.R., with mostly raw organic fruits and veggies? (needs more protein in her diet)
I guess I am looking for a label, ha!
all the best from Sheila.
(I notice that sometimes there is another Sheila who posts here not too frequently)

Oh, one more thing, let us know when the CNN piece will air!

Hello April! Thank you for all your comments on my blog. I figured out a way to post my RDA's....so we'll see about those pesky percentages.
You make me wish we had a Whole Foods here! It sounds like the produce selection beats the pants off Kroger. I'm off on a veggi hunt tomorrow - wish me luck! :P

I really want to see the CNN thing. Did they give you any ideas when it would be on?

Over Thanksgiving, I visited my parents, and my mother made her maiden journey to Whole Foods. She was astounded. All of those beautifully arranged and colorful vegetables made us both so happy! It is pure pleasure just to look.
