St. Peter's Fish
That should answer the question of the day.
Artifex and MR picked the same thing off the menu: mussels and the green salad. That was my plan, until the party began to order and I realized that everyone was ordering just an entree, not an appetizer or salad followed by an entree. So I quickly re-adjusted my plan and got the tilapia, which I had had before, so that I could get both protein and veggies in the meal instead of having to choose. I also endorsed the tilapia so heartily to the other diners that several of them ordered it as well. It came over steamed veggies: snow pea pods, carrots, and maybe zucchini. I love tilapia! It's a fish we can feel good about. Not sure what St. Peter has to do with it, but there you go.
My friend who was exhibiting his art introduced me to the others by mentioning my CR involvement. This always makes me a bit nervous, especially if the activity is a meal, since I worry that people are going to feel self-conscious eating around me. My dinner companions asked several questions about CR and diet in general, and I found myself launching into a mini-lecture. It's like someone presses "Play" on my head and I spit out the answers I've now practiced so many times in media interviews. I hope I answered their questions without boring them to death! No one at my table ordered dessert, and both the host and I ordered a glass of vintage port in a cute little tiny port glass (I have a thing for tiny glasses) that was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed meeting our host's friends, and the exhibit was fantastic.
After this short spell of eating out two days in a row, I feel desperate to return to the lower calorie end of my quotidian diet. This week should be fairly safe, until next Saturday when we are going to a dinner party at a friend's house. I will probably go down to 1200 even for the week to a) make up for any excesses left over from the last two days b) be prepared for lamb stew next Saturday night.
In other news, I owe people several posts:
1. Michelle requests a sample, RDA perfect 1000 - 1300 calorie menu. I can do that fairly easily since it's what I eat most days, I just have to adjust my Cron-O-Meter version for a few things to make sure it's accurate and I haven't gotten around to it yet.
2. Cat asks about diet sodas. Working on that entry, not done.
3. Another reader asks about methionine restriction, and I have to write about that.
4. I need to re-post my flax oil vs. fish oil post.
Can anyone think of any more posts that I owe?
Someone asked about pictures of the food... when I get my new site (really, we're working on it!) I'll be able to post pics. My web designer has been a bit swamped with his other clients as of late, sorry for the delay!
Meanwhile, I've been wondering... how did you happen to find the blog? I know I have a lot of readers from that NY Mag article. If you feel like it, do comment and tell me how you found me.
Off to make lunch.

Hey, just wondering-- did you see this NYT mag article that ran today? It's called "Unhappy Meals" and I was actually fairly impressed- it was common sense and easy to understand. CR gets a mention in a sentence or so near the end (it's long):

Great posts, as usual (=

Heck, I think I've been reading your blog(s) for a couple years.. I think I found out about CR from reading Walford's book (and I was aware previous to that of the Biosphere 2 stuff).. maybe I found your blog through a google search on CR? Not sure...

I found your blog after finding the NY Magazine article. Even though many feel the ultimate spin was negative, I was sufficiently intrigued to then perform a Google search and found your blog. Have been reading you daily since then and I went back and read ALL the archives. I think your blog is very well written, thought provoking and inspiring. Keep up the great work!

I found your blog through the NY Magazine article and have been an avid reader ever since. And for the record, I don't think anyone in that article looked at all oompa loompa-esque! Grrr. Anyway, this blog just keeps getting better and better!

Hi April,
I found out about your blog from the NYMag article, though I had been researching/reading about CRON for about two years prior to that.
I'm still waiting for the savory mega muffin recipe, unless somehow you have posted it and I missed it. Also, I'd like to know if MR has any horrific evidence that would keep me from drinking certain types of tea.
Thanks!
Hilary

about 2 years ago, I was surfing the net, looking for the nutritional and calorie information of a raw mango.
this led me to a page in a blog by Mary Robinson. It was a post from July 16th, 2004.
The days entry was called, "Lots of Orange".
I was fascinated to find other people like me who kept a low calorie count while trying to pack in as much nutrition as possible.
There was a link to April's blog, which led me here. I find April's blog to be interesting with a "girly" fun quality to it.
I joined and then quit the C.R. support group on Yahoo groups, it wasn't fun or user friendly, (at least for me anyway). I have done stints of raw veganism and fruitarianism, but I am way more into C.R. now, so that I can eat a wider variety of all foods.

Hey April -
First, thanks for the tip about the fat before meals to ward off sugar cravings! I'll do it. :)
Also - I'd love to see the menu for 1000-1300...
And finally - I once, maybe 8 months ago did a search for Calorie Restriction and your blog popped up.
Stay warm! J

Hey April! I found your blog through google. I was looking up nutrition info and the moment I read your entry, I loved it and visit it everyday!

Hi April,
The NY Mag article sparked my interest in CR and I came across your site while googling around after I read it. I've been a regular reader ever since! Your entries are always well thought out and very well written. While I appreciate your enthusiasm for CR my interest is in obesity avoidance and a healthy lifestyle. Nevertheless you offer a wealth of information and good advice so there appears to be plenty of room for me at your site.
I've downloaded and am using Cron-O-Meter, a great program. I also checked Food Fight out of my local Library and am about 1/3 of the way through it. You can see that your influence extends beyond the CR crowd!
Keep up the good work and take care,
Tim

I started following your blog shortly before the NY Magazine piece. I believe I just googled for "calorie restriction" and pulled up one of your posts. And I'm *so* glad I did! =)

I can't remember how I found you- but it was almost two years ago I think.

I'm definitely looking forward to the diet soda post and the flax/fish oil one. I have a feeling I should be saying goodbye to my very dear friend diet cherry coke. And my even more dear (but harder to find) friend diet black cherry vanilla coke (what can I say? I like my artificial flavors REALLY artificial).
I discovered your blog a year and half ago through a low-carb blog - don't remember what one. I believe it was a fairly negative mention, but I clicked the link, started reading, and was hooked. I'd never heard of CR.
And thanks for the supportive comments on my blog, knowing you all are out there rooting for me really helps me get back on track when I get off.

Hi April! I had been following Dr. Sears "Zone" in a kind of lazy (occassionally gak-filled) way with a good deal of success, but I didn't feel wonderful (I was just barely avoiding my crazy sugar habit, rather than feeling like I had defeated it). I found you through the NY Magazine article, and have since realized that what I was missing was (duh) nutrition! I have really enjoyed all of the information you share (the amount of time you put in to helping "newbies" is mind-boggling) and using CRON-o-meter (I used to use NutritionData- less friendly!). Anyway, thanks for everything!

Brooke: Nope! Never heard of that..

I found your blog two or more years ago through some CR site.

Gregg: fair enough ;) It's an unusual name so combined with the same last initial I thought you might be a skinny guy I knew a few years ago!

I found you on google - "CR" - which had actually been getting a lot of press that whole week - I think it was mentioned in the NYTimes, some other newspaper like AMnewyork and the magazine... I know I read the magazine after already hearing about it. Anyways... Thanks for writing - it takes a bold person to change your habits so completely and commit! There are so many diets out there that are so sad - cutting calories and exercise is great, but not if you're eating rice cakes and celery all day... nutrition is so important. I LOVE the CRON-O-Meter it just gives such vital imformation. I saw a product like it advertised on tv but it only told the calories, fiber, cholesterol, and sodium. There's so much more to be aware of! So, thank you. This is the most sensible eating plan I've ever read.
