I Can Feel My Risk Of Fracture Decreasing
That's what I said to MR when I got home from my first Pilates class. Wow! They say it's supposed to increase core strength, and I can tell it works from the very first class. All the work on balance and trunk strengthening will really help out when I'm walking on ice through all of our icky northeastern winters. Decreasing fractures is about both strengthening bones and preventing falls: I'm already working hard with my calcium, high-impact exercise, weight lifting and bone building supplements on the strengthening bones part, now I can work on the preventing falls part too! I found the class simultaneously difficult and relaxing, and I came out of it totally energized and ready to face the day.
I strongly recommend a Pilates class to all CR practitioners out there. I may even attempt to drag MR along to one. Improved balance... greater strength... sexy chicks in leotards... what's not to love?

Hi April!
What does your high-impact and weight lifting consist of? As you've continued to lower your calories over time have your workouts become easier, harder or no difference?
Thanks
Jacq

I LOVE pilates too! It's given me strength and balance. That combined with my cardio (hula & tahitian dance) definitely decreases my "spaz factor".
Glad you've experienced the beauty of Pilates!

I really want to try Pilates but sadly don't have the time right now :-/ (work, college, distance cycling, pets, partners, friends...)
On a side-note: do you have any recommendations/suggestions for keeping track of food intake when you don't do the cooking? I'm currently weighing the stuff I cook myself (not all the time, I confess!), but I don't make dinner & I'm not really comfortable with asking my partner to weigh everything... Is it worth guessing, based on my new improved knowledge of how much different sorts of veg weigh? Or should I just ignore dinner and focus on improving the rest of my food day?
(NB I am not CRed; I am however trying to lose a little weight to get a bit faster on the bike (I didn't start overweight or anything). And to improve my nutrition a bit, although almost everything I eat is home-made & vegetable-based so it's not too shabby right now either!)

"Bone building supplements ?"
You were going to write about your revised supplement regime, you said .. maybe I missed a posting somewhere. It's time for me to refill on supplements, and it took some digging through the AOR site to find Ortho-Core, which seems like a good place to start ..

The sign of a great pilates session - sore thighs and abs! Sometimes a little ouch is a good thing. :)

You've inspired me. I've been looking for a strengthening exercise to help me with my ballet class. I know about Pilates but have not been that interested until now. I will have to find a class in my town (or at my college...I'm sure we have them.)
FYI, I've been reading your blog since October and even though I'm only slightly CR'd, your blog has helped me become more mindful of what I eat and I am living a healthier lifestyle. I have nutritional software and it's a fun game to try to get all my nutrients in a day while keeping the things I don't need to a minimum. Mild CR has improved my mental health, particularly in issues of eating but other things as well, not to mention what it's done for my physical health! I'm glad to have come across it at a young age (22) and I consider it a permanant lifestyle change. Thank you for the inspiration, April!

I adore Pilates. Being a stiffened runner-type, I find yoga humiliating and just plain HARD - which tells me that I should do it more, of course. :-)
But Pilates - with good core strength, which I have, I can do damn near every pose to perfection - and in a class of beginners that gives one a boost of confidence, ya know?
Ok, off to do some yoga where people can't see me...
