March Is Megamuffin Month

Happy March, everyone.

I have recently observed that I am much more satisfied and less likely to eat extra calories when I'm sure to get my megamuffin in every day. The vast majority of days, I eat a megamuffin, either a cherry berry or a savory, in April-size version, for 209 calories each and 20.9% of the RDA of everything in each happy muffin. (MR's megamuffins are 280 calories, but he is much taller than I am, even when I'm wearing heels, so he has to eat more.) On days when for whatever reason I don't eat a megamuffin, whether I'm eating out at lunch or dinner or just eating something unusual, I often find that I get hungry at some point in the day when I'd rather not. It's not too bad when I end up either not eating or just grabbing a half a pint of grape tomatoes or an extra slice of nonfat cheese, or even some almonds. But lately I've been feeling suceptible to the evil dried fruit (apricot and mango) that seems to have taken up residence in the public areas of our office, and it's so calorie dense that it's easy to eat a lot of calories and a lot of sugar without really feeling filled up. I take it out of later calories, of course, but it just means I'm a bit hungrier and less satisfied. The megamuffin is like a magic amulet, defending me against all such cravings. So my goal for the month of March is to eat a megamuffin every single day. Whether it's for breakfast on the road, with lunch as a side dish or dessert, as a snack between meals, or topped with a slice of nonfat cheese, toasted and covered with a teaspoon of flax oil and some Louisiana hot sauce (the Megamuffin Cheesesteak, I call it), Megamuffins really satisfy.

Today my friend who likes to take me out to lunch (good kind of friend to have) is taking me and our other lunching buddy out to a new place in our little town, Blackfish (that's the restaurant, not the town.) I've linked to the lunch menu, on which I find one point rather confusing: there seems to be no fish. Am I missing something? There's fish on the dinner menu. I was hoping for a nice fish dish, but apparently no such luck. I'll call to find out if there are specials. If not, I think that you and I both know what I'm going to order, but put in your suggestions/guesses as comments and we can play the "readers pick April's meal out" game once again.

I'm already looking forward to my MR made salad with yogurt and salsa verde and Emerill's green hot sauce and flax oil at home tonight. Oh, and to seeing my angel again... I spent the night last night at my mom's, and we had a wonderful time as always, drooling over Keith Olbermann, and then we stayed up way too late watching Dirty Dancing. But for some reason I woke up in the middle of the night missing my usual bedmates, MR and Philomena the ancient howling calico. Usually MR and I don't really miss each other when one of us is away for just a day or two, but last night I just wanted to wake up and see him sleeping skinnily next to me.

I didn't miss the howling though. My mother's cat is extremely well-behaved and would never wake up the humans to howl for food, or who knows what. He's orange too... looks strikingly like MR. My mother says we're all related. I guess we are, in the sorta cosmic sense.

Wow, I'm getting flaky. I'm sleepy. I carried a watermelon.

Last night when I was sick, we were watching The Idol and I mentioned to my wife that Dirty Dancing was on. I have never seen it, and she almost had us watch it. It still brings back memories, I guess from that 16 year old girl in her.

You carried a watermelon? I'm missing something here. . .

Not a lot of choices on that lunch menu! And it's kind of unclear whether the salads are appetizers or entree salads, the mixed greens looks like an appetizer, but chicken caesar looks like an entree. I actually can't figure out a single way to get protein on that menu, unless you get the chicken caesar, but without croutons, cheese, or dressing, that's basically lettuce and chicken - not so good.

Hopefully they have a lovely fish special :)

My selection for you would be the Belgian Endive, Apple & Walnut Salad with a grilled chicken breast sliced over the top. And while you're there, tell the twits it's Belgian, not Belgium endive. As for the wonder of Megamuffins, Mother's Day is coming...... MoMR ;-)

Yummm...Megamuffins are the best! I'm going to try to eat one every day, too. They're just so perfect in every way.
I loved your phrase about MR, "sleeping skinnily..." that's so cute!
Loving your blog, as always...

A megamuffin is a muffin-based baked good engineered to have 10% of the RDA of each nutrient for each 100 calories.

The recipe is here: http://www.mprize.org/blogs/archives/2006/11/have_a_megamuff.html

Yes, you can buy them online, here: http://foodpart.com/index_files/CRONservices.htm

I'm really going to have to try one of these megamuffins someday. I have to be the last CRONie on the planet who hasn't had one.

Let me put in a vote for Andrea's MegaMuffins!

She even made me gluten free MegaMuffins, and they taste great! I just had one for breakfast today. She sizes them at about 100 calories each and I can only eat one - they're very filling. I wanted to eat a fruit too, but I just couldn't. Too full. With my latte in the morning - perfect.

Sierra,
Thank you so much! I can't tell you all how much I appreciate hearing that the megamuffins are a good resource to provide.

I see a lot of immediate turnaround from comments on this blog to orders on my site - it's magically amazing, and certainly helpful. :-)
